Summary Acute life-threatening complications can arise during both pregnancy and the early postpartum period and result in maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality. Substandard care and poor communication have been identified repeatedly as contributory factors to adverse outcomes from obstetric emergencies. Prompt recognition of life-threatening conditions and early effective multidisciplinary management are essential to ensure optimal maternal and fetal outcome. This article considers both generic and specific concepts of emergency management in the peripartum period. It examines the causes, differential diagnosis and management of major acute life-threatening complications of pregnancy. & 2006 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
